In autumn, leaves turn various shades of yellow, orange and red. Trunks are typically smooth and dark gray with muscle-like fluting.

(Product)

As with other members of the birch family, hornbeam flowers are wind-pollinated pendulous catkins, produced in spring. Male and female flowers are on separate catkins, but on the same tree, thus, it is monoecious. Female flowers give way to distinctive clusters of winged seeds that resemble the hops-like seeds of ironwood.

(Fun fact)

The Hornbeam has very dense, hard wood that is often used for tool handles, longbows, walking sticks, and golf clubs. This tree is sometimes called “musclewood” due to the muscled appearance of its bark. Like the beech, the hornbeam does not shed all of its leaves in winter, so provides shelter throughout the cold winter months.

Back to the menu of the learning path

2. Gyertyán/ Carpinus betulus

A faj megtalálható az északi félteke mérsékelt égövi régióinak nagy részén.

A gyertyán közkeletű angol elnevezését—hornbeam—a fa keménysége miatt kapta, mivel a szarvhoz hasonlítják.

A gyertyánok vékony, lassan növő, természetesen lekerekített formájú fák, amelyek magassága és szélte is azonos; az alsó lombkoronaszintet alkotják.
