It is an endangered species with less than 80 thousand trees remaining. They grow to a towering average height of 50-85 meters, with a trunk diameter of approximately 6-8 meters. The tallest ones have been measured at 95 m tall. It is the most massive species of tree on earth. They are one of the longest living organisms as well, with the oldest ones living up to 3200 years. The bark is red and fibrous, and wood from giant sequoias is also fibrous and brittle. The wood is unsuitable for construction and instead used for fence posts or matchsticks. The leaves are evergreen, awl-shaped, 3\u20136 mm long, and arranged spirally on the shoots. It is originally from the mountains of California but now it can be found around the world. It is a very popular ornamental tree in some parts of the world.
