This species is native to Eastern Europe and Asia Minor. It received its name from the shape of its leaves, which resemble a turkey’s foot.

This tree usually grows up to 25-40 meters, with a trunk up to 2 m. The glossy leaves are deeply cut with short points at the tips. Its flowers are wind- pollinated catkin, which means a slim spike with no petals. These are very valuable to wildlife, as they provide a source of pollen for the bees and insects. The tree’s fruit is a large acorn, which is very bitter but is eaten by squirrels and jays. This tree can be distinguished from other oak types by its hairy acorn cups, which look like they are coated with moss.

Even though these trees are not native in England, they have become naturalized there in the 18th century. Its native habitat is dry, sandy and well-drained soil. It is one of the most common trees in Hungary, with huge forests of it. It has a high resistance of wind and it’s very drought tolerant. Although not very useful as wood for building, this tree is very helpful for wildlife, and it became an essential part of Hungarian nature.

Back to the menu of the learning path

15. Csertölgy / Quercus cerris

Az előtted magasló fa egy csertölgy, latinul quercus cerris.
