In the wild, this shrub is often found along the banks of streams, the edges of woods, rocky slopes, and moist open areas, although it is often found in medium to moist locations, once established, ninebark can be very drought tolerant and it can also survive in temperatures as low as -30 C. It grows well in a variety of soils, including rocky and clay soils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bush gets its name from its unique exfoliating bark, which peels back in thin layers as its branches mature which reveals layers of reddish to light brown underlying bark. Ninebark belongs to the Rose family and it is a multi-stemmed shrub that grows between 2,5 and 3,5 meters. Its branches are upright and arching. The leaves of the ninebark are simple and they alternate along the stem, they are 3-12 cm long, 2, 5-5 cm wide, the blades lance-oval to nearly round in outline, mostly 3-lobed with coarsely toothed edges. The upper surface is dark green and the lower surface is lighter and both sides either have hairs or are smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ninebark blooms in late spring and early summer and during that time it produces clusters of white to pale pink flowers. The flowers are highly attractive to honey bees, butterflies, caterpillars and also some birds like to nest among its dense branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Native American tribes used the inner bark as a laxative, and a diuretic.
