It can grow up to 30 cm tall and 1.8 m wide. Its bark is brown and smooth, and its branches are reddish and flexible. Its small, ovate leaves are dark green on top and lighter underneath, turning reddish-purple in fall and winter. The leaves are deeply veined, leathery to the touch with opposite, pinnate venation and a silvery, mottled leaf backbone. Bearberry cotoneaster is monoecious, meaning that both male and female structures grow on the same plant. Small, white flowers with pink tinges and purple anthers appear in late spring to early summer, attracting bees and butterflies. They are followed by showy berries, which ripen to bright red in fall and persist through winter, providing food for birds and other animals. It is native to China, but has been widely cultivated and naturalized in other regions. It adapts to a range of soil types and pH levels, but prefers well-drained soil.
