It is deciduous, so it loses its leaves in the fall. The leaves are green, set opposite and are pinnately compound. The leaflets are 7-13 centimeters long, with coarsely serrated edges. They are narrow and elliptic in shape. They have a tall, narrow crown, and usually grow up to 12-18 meters, but can occasionally be as tall as 43 m. The bark is smooth and pale gray when young, but becomes darker and vertically fissured in older specimens. The flowers grow in short panicles and open before the leaves. The seeds are commonly known as “keys”, and are actually a type of fruit called a samara. The wood is highly flexible and shock and split resistant, thus it’s widely used to make bows and tool handles.

Back to the menu of the learning path

28. Magas Kőris / Fraxinus Excelsior

A magas kőris vagy a Fraxinus Excelsior az olajfák családjába tartozik, és Európa nagy részén elterjedt.
