22. Black Pine / Pinus negra
The Pinus Negra, or black pine, is a huge coniferous tree, growing up to 55 meters tall. It is an evergreen tree with a single, round trunk and gray bark that is smooth when the tree is young, but turns fissured with age until scaly plates form on it. The branches are ascending and as the tree gets older, the bottom branches die. The tree is cone shaped when it’s young but the top of older specimens flattens. Its leaves are needles, growing in twos all over the branches, and are stiff and curved. The brown, ovoid cones are symmetrical when they appear, and fall shortly after the seeds ripen. They are an excellent source of food for the red squirrel.
The oldest living specimen lives in Corsica, and it is 849 years old.

22. Feketefenyő / Pinus negra
A Pinus Negra vagy fekete fenyő egy hatalmas tűlevelű fa, örökzöld fa, ami akár 55 méter magasra is megnő. Egyenes, elágazásmentes, kerek törzse van és szürke kérge, amely fiatalon sima, de a kor előrehaladtával repedezetté válik, amíg pikkelyes lemezek nem képződnek rajta. Az ágak körkörösen nőnek, és ahogy a fa öregszik, az alsó ágak elhalnak. A fa fiatal korában kúp alakú, de az idősebb példányok teteje ellaposodik. Levelei tűlevelek, kettesével nőnek végig az ágakon, merevek és enyhén görbék. A barna, tojásdad tobozok megjelenésükkor szimmetrikusak, és röviddel a magok beérése után lehullanak, kiváló táplálékforrást biztosítva a vörös mókus számára.
A legidősebb élő példány Korzikán él, és 849 éves.
