10. Mammoth Pine / Sequoiadendron giganteum
The mammoth pine is one of the largest trees on the planet, and it is also known as the giant redwood or Sequoiadendron giganteum. It is an endangered species with less than 80 thousand trees remaining. They grow to a towering average height of 50-85 meters, with a trunk diameter of approximately 6-8 meters. The tallest ones have been measured at 95 m tall. It is the most massive species of tree on earth. They are one of the longest living organisms as well, with the oldest ones living up to 3200 years. The bark is red and fibrous, and wood from giant sequoias is also fibrous and brittle. The wood is unsuitable for construction and instead used for fence posts or matchsticks. The leaves are evergreen, awl-shaped, 3–6 mm long, and arranged spirally on the shoots. It is originally from the mountains of California but now it can be found around the world. It is a very popular ornamental tree in some parts of the world. The species is probably named after the Cherokee Chief Sequoyah, who created their alphabet.

10. Mamutfenyő / Sequoiadendron giganteum
A mamutfenyő a bolygó egyik legnagyobb fája, amit Sequoiadendron giganteumnak is neveznek. Veszélyeztetett faj, kevesebb mint 80 ezer példány maradt meg belőle. Átlagosan 50-85 méter magasra nő, törzsátmérője pedig körülbelül 6-8 méter. A legmagasabb példányok a 95 métert is elérik. Ez a legnehezebb fafaj a Földön, és az egyik leghosszabb életű élőlény; a legidősebbek akár 3200 évig is élhetnek. Az óriás mamutfenyők törzse vörös és rostos, faanyaga szintén rostos és törékeny, ezért nem alkalmas építésre, inkább kerítésoszlopnak vagy gyufaszálnak használták. Örökzöld tűlevelei 3-6 mm hosszúak, és spirálisan helyezkednek el a hajtáson. Eredetileg a kaliforniai hegyekből származik, de ma már az egész világon megtalálható. A világ egyes részein népszerű díszfa. A fajt egyesek szerint a cseroki írást kidolgozó törzsfőnökről, Sequoyah-ról nevezték el.
